  • Quality of Computationally Inferred Gene Ontology Annotations

    Gene Ontology (GO) is the main method used for describing protein functions. And because of the sheer number of the known proteins, most of these function descriptions are created automatically, using computational methods, and without a person checking them. Because of this, such function descriptions are often thought to be relatively unreliable. Despite this, as they are relatively cheap to create, the automatic descriptions are used a lot, especially for newly sequenced and non-model organisms.

    In this study, we introduced a way to measure the quality of these automatic descriptions by looking at changes in a reference database over time. And contrary to common wisdom, our results showed that these descriptions have improved a lot and are now almost as reliable as those manually checked by people. This is important because more than 98% of all descriptions available at the time are created automatically, and our method helps us know which ones we can trust.

  • Appway Academy: e-learning, in-person training, and professional certification

    Appway Platform (now acquired by FNZ) is a design-time and run-time development environment for web applications that provides engines and services to execute business process models, render HTML pages, evaluate rules, and persist data.

    As the Academy Lead at Appway, I was responsible for designing and developing comprehensive e-learning courses tailored for a B2B business context. Together with an eight-member team, our goal was to provide Appway clients with a robust learning experience that enabled them to maximize the potential of Appway's software solutions. Drawing on my academic background, I implemented pedagogical strategies that fostered engagement, promoted knowledge retention, and facilitated the practical application of skills in real-world scenarios.

    In creating the nine training courses (in-person and e-learning), and trainee assessment through three certification programs, our goal was to contribute to the enhancement of our clients' technical competencies, empowering them to achieve their business objectives more effectively.

  • Driving success in Google's Knowledge Engine Platform with Program Management

    The Knowledge Engine Platform, an integral part of Google Search, leverages the Knowledge Graph to provide users with accurate and relevant information.

    The Knowledge Engine is based on a vast database of interconnected entities and facts, designed to enhance the search experience by understanding users’ queries, returning contextually appropriate results, and presenting these results in a visually appealing manner, such as rich snippets, knowledge panels, and interactive elements. This way, users can discover new connections and explore related topics, promoting a more efficient and engaging search experience.

    In a large IT organisation that is Google, Platform teams such as the Knowledge Engine play a crucial role in creating the technological infrastructure that enables cross-functional collaboration, data management, and workflow automation across various departments.

    In my role, I am contributing to the successful management and delivery of Google Search Products, while fostering a collaborative and goal-oriented environment; I’m responsible for planning, execution, and delivery of projects within the Knowledge Engine team.
